Role: Economics & Benchmarking Analyst

Location: Jakarta

Position Type: Full-time

Reports to: Chief Economist

About AME Group

AME Group is a leading provider of consulting and research services to the Metals & Mining and Coal & Consumable Fuels industries. Drawing on more than 50 years of industry expertise, we deliver bespoke consulting engagements, subscription research, and software-as-a-service products to clients globally.

About the Role

We are seeking an Economics and Benchmarking Analyst to take ownership of the macroeconomic inputs that underpin AME’s research and forecasting, and to keep them current, consistent, and “joined-up” across our systems and client-facing product (SaaS platform - "AME Direct").

Working alongside our Chief Economist, the Economics Analyst will own the quarterly cadence of updating our macroeconomic scenarios and country-level forecasts, ensuring the underlying data flows through consistently from the global baseline to individual country views, and ultimately to the energy prices and cost curves that depend on them.

This is a role designed to grow. The initial focus is on taking ownership of the quarterly process and the data behind it. As you build familiarity with AME’s house view and the industries we cover, the role broadens into the written and analytical side; authoring the qualitative country commentary and producing region-specific analysis alongside the Chief Economist. We expect that transition to happen progressively over the first twelve months.

From day one, the Economics Analyst will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating the quarterly update of AME’s macroeconomic scenarios and ensuring the latest versions are live, consistent, and communicated across the business

  • Maintaining country-level macroeconomic forecasts and the data that feeds into AME’s energy price forecasts, cost curves, and client-facing products

  • Keeping slow-moving country-level reference data current and accurate

As the role develops, it will extend to:

  • Refreshing qualitative country-level commentary for the key economies to maintain a consistent house view

  • Working with the Chief Economist to produce region-specific analysis that supports content-driven marketing and sales

Key Responsibilities

Core scope

1. Coordinate the quarterly macroeconomic scenario update

  • Manage the quarterly process of loading updated macroeconomic scenario cases into the research platform, ensuring the system is kept up to date with the latest versions

  • Communicate to the wider research team when the latest scenarios are available for use in downstream tools

  • Issue the quarterly scenario update to clients

  • Ensure the rest of the system remains consistent with the new baseline

2. Maintain country-level macroeconomic forecasts and data

  • Own country-level forecast views and update them in line with AME’s global base case: for example, revising forecasts when the base case becomes more or less bullish on a country. Data engineers can help automate historical series; the analyst remains responsible for forecast views.

  • Ensure energy price forecasts reflect the house view and flow through correctly to the cost curves that depend on them

  • Own the macroeconomic indicators surfaced to clients, keeping them current and consistent

3. Maintain slow-moving country reference data

  • Keep slow-moving country-level reference data up to date, such as election results and ruling-party information

Developing scope

The following responsibilities are not expected from day one. You will begin by contributing to them under the direction of the Chief Economist, and take increasing ownership as you build familiarity with AME’s house view over the first 12 months

4. Refresh qualitative country-level commentary

  • Once the global baseline is in place, update the qualitative discussion on the key economies (e.g. China, USA, Japan, Germany, Korea) to maintain a consistent AME view

  • Initially drafting sections for review by the Chief Economist, moving towards owning the commentary as part of the standard quarterly cycle

5. Support content-driven marketing

  • Work with the Chief Economist to produce region-specific articles (for example, an analysis of a specific economy and its implications for the steel industry or mining investment) that give the marketing and sales teams strong material to target prospects on LinkedIn, X, and other channels

  • Contribute research and analysis to these pieces in the first instance, progressing to authoring them independently

Qualification and Experience

This is a role for someone who combines a solid grounding in macroeconomics with the discipline to own a recurring process and see it through. It will suit an analyst who is comfortable maintaining forecasts and data, coordinating with economists, research colleagues, and data engineers to keep everything consistent, and who wants to develop into a more visible analytical and editorial role over time.

Required

  • A degree in economics, or a closely related quantitative discipline

  • A sound understanding of macroeconomics and macroeconomic forecasting, and how a change in the base case should flow through to country-level forecasts

  • Strong data-handling skills and comfort maintaining and updating forecast datasets

  • A proactive, self-directed approach, with the discipline to own a recurring quarterly process end-to-end and keep multiple dependent outputs consistent

  • Sound judgement in maintaining a consistent house view across commentary, data, and forecasts

  • Clear written English, and the desire to develop into writing concise commentary and client-facing analysis

Highly Desirable

  • Prior experience in an economics research, forecasting, or analyst role, ideally in a commercial or consulting setting with 3-5 years of experience

  • Familiarity with commodity, metals & mining, or energy markets

  • Experience working alongside data engineers to identify sources and validate data

  • Experience producing thought-leadership or marketing-oriented analysis

Technical Skills

  • Confident with spreadsheets and standard productivity software (e.g. Microsoft Office)

  • Comfortable working with data tools and, ideally, some scripting (e.g. Python or R) or BI tools for maintaining and checking datasets

  • Able to keep clear, structured records and follow a defined process consistently

  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical, structured approach

What We Offer

  • Modern, central office near to public transport and key amenities

  • Competitive salary

  • Health Care

  • Lunch

  • 13 months salary
